In 1828 Springbank was built on the site of the alembic previously used by Archibald Mitchell (the Mitchell family, founders of Springbank, arrived in Campbeltown in 1660 as settlers from the lowlands) and Springbank Distillery was officially established, becoming the 14th licensed distillery in Campbeltown.

Since then the heirs of the family have succeeded one another between ups and downs until arriving in the mid-1900s to be recognized as one of the best distilleries in Scotland.

Today, Springbank is one of only three distilleries operating in the Campbeltown area and is the oldest family-run independent distillery in Scotland.
